A. Jarrell Hayes

A. Jarrell Hayes was born in 1982 in Baltimore, MD. He was raised in the suburbs of Columbia, MD. His love of reading started at an early age, as he read books from his older brothers in an attempt to emulate them. The computer games Writer Rabbit and Reader Rabbit pushed him to pursue writing. His first written books were handwritten and self-illustrated tales in the vein of Choose Your Own Adventure books.

At a young age he was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder and schizophrenia. At times he had to be institutionalized. However, those circumstances only helped to foster the independent and entrepreneur spirit within him.

Fiction

"I believe the art of storytelling is alive and well, but it's the art of story crafting that is suffering. My writing style isn't set out to wow you with flashy prose: my goal is to hook you with a fantastic, deep plot and entertaining storyline. I want to craft a world of the reader's imagination; letting the reader's mind fill in certain details while I focus on the characters and the action. I also like to leave a lot of mystery in my writing, because life is mysterious at times and I want to capture life as realistically as possible in my stories."

Poetry

 "I had a lot of diverse experiences growing up, and I believe my poetry reflects the diversity of my life and American life. My collections are themed based but all of them have an underlining motif: the connectivity of the universe. In my poetry I create a circle containing humanity, nature, time, space, body and spirit; a circle I believe encompass us all. My poetry has been 'criticized' as being too conversational. Good. As a poet, I want to make the reader as comfortable as possible with the poem, even if the subject is an uncomfortable one, as if a close personal friend were talking to the reader. Some poets write poems that speak at the readers, others to the readers; I want my poetry to speak with the reader. They're conversations."
